Facilities
The new facilities which will be readily available for use at Aberdeen Sports Village are numerous. Completion of Phase 1 of construction in summer 2009 will see a host of sporting amenities previously unavailable and unseen in the North East. These will be:
A full-size indoor football pitch
Fancy yourself as the next David Beckham? This particular facility will even be the envy of clubs as large as Manchester United who, although they can match it for quality, cannot compete with the scale of the pitch which surpasses the dimensions of the one on show at their Carrington Training Complex. The pitch will be made of 3rd generational FIFA-approve astro-grass and is one of the first facilities of its kind in Scotland. Other astro facilities are not comparable, as you will find out for yourself. No longer need you dread the prospect of that last-ditch tackle, or game-winning header. This surface caters for all game-like circumstances.
Indoor running straight with throwing and jumping areas
Are explosive athletics disciplines your speciality? Increase your running speed, jumping height and throwing distance with these training specific facilities provided to encourage all levels of athletes to participate. You’ll have no more worries about long hours spent in darkened, miserable, wintry conditions with the provision of these facilities, designed to allow users to hone their technique to their heart’s content!
Large games hall
Large doesn’t quite give it justice! It will be like a utopia for badminton enthusiasts who can enjoy enough space provided for nine courts to be in use at one given time! When not being used for court-sized activities, the huge space can be sub-divided into three moderate sized playing areas for team sports such as basketball, netball, volleyball and indoor hockey to name but a few possibilities. With an indoor hall of this magnitude, there really is space for all sports, whether the numbers involved are minimal, or a large group, or even groups, want to be catered for!
Squash courts
Squash devotees can enjoy the use of four brand-new squash courts, two of which are equipped with glass-backed elements with seated areas appropriately positioned to enable spectators to take in the action should they desire to do so. Whether your level is competitive, or you sometimes find yourself wildly thrashing at thin air, there is fun to be had for all in what is a great way to keep fit.
Large fitness suite and performance gymnasium
The fitness suite will cater for all those looking to improve fitness levels with over 100 pieces of CV and strength equipment available for use. These will be equipped with up-to-the-minute fitness technology enabling clients to adhere to a pre-designed personal training programme at the touch of a button. Aberdeen Sports Village aim is to make their clients’ gym visit as enjoyable as possible and the inclusion of large plasma screens and personal viewing screens are sure to enhance the experience for all who attend
Two studios
Aberdeen Sports Village will also contain two studios included for hosting a variety of exercise classes. Music-based, spinning and martial arts classes will all take place in these facilities. These particular classes are not for the faint-hearted and are guaranteed to get the heart pumping, though there are other, more relaxing classes available which might be more appealing to some sectors of the public.
400 metre outdoor athletics track
Despite there being indoor facilities for any budding athletes, there will also be additional outdoor facilities which are expected to be used on a regular basis. The 400 metre track will enable clubs to book regular training slots, as well as organise competitions wherever this may be possible.
Floodlit water-based hockey pitch
Hockey fanatics can look forward to displaying their skills night and day on the new floodlit water-based hockey pitch. The pitch will meet international standard requirements and the water-based surface will see the ball arrive at its destination more quickly than is the case on less high-quality artificial surfaces. Speed of ball, stick and thought will be an advantage on this ultra-quick surface!
Sports performance laboratory
Are you in search of the body beautiful, or simply ready to engage in a healthy regime? Make an appointment with our specialists who can break down your exercise needs with a variety of practices. Get your fitness assessed, or body-fat analysed if you are in search of your optimum body performance and body composition. The laboratory will also have a specific area for athlete testing where the Grampian Institute of Sport athletes will be monitored to ensure that they are maintaining peak physical fitness. Physiotherapy sessions will take place in the laboratory and these can be booked if needed to help ease off those aches and pains.
Crèche, café and spectator seating
Take advantage of some free time by dropping the kids off at the crèche, relax with some friends in the café post-exercise, or watch someone you know struggling while you take it easy in the spectator gallery! Enjoyment through sport comes in many different forms!
Further developments
Phase 2 of the development will commence in summer 2009 once the aforementioned facilities are operational. The plan for this stage of the project is to implement additional grass and artificial pitches on the site. At the moment, discussions are ongoing between the founding partners of Aberdeen Sports Village for the proposal of Phase 3. If, as is hoped, this ambitious plan comes to fruition, the culmination of years of endeavour would herald the inclusion of an impressive 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool, with additional features yet to be decided.
Can I use the facilities?
Yes! Whether your chosen sport is firmly established in the North East, or less well catered for, the partners behind Aberdeen Sports Village encourage all-comers to try the facility out for size and hope that clients enjoy an unparalleled sports experience.
Aberdeen Sports Village are keen to promote the provision of a wide range of activities for the sports-oriented members of society at large, irrespective of ability level. Also of high importance, is nurturing the development of local sports talent, such as the athletes supported by the Grampian Institute of Sport, as we seek to help unearth and groom stars of the future. Expert or beginner, there really will be room for all to enjoy the facilities on offer!
