World War II Bomb found at Aberdeen Sports Village
An unexploded 60 mm mortar was found by construction workers at the Aberdeen Sports Village
The Sports Village was sealed off by police at around 4pm and the Royal logisitic Corps Bomb Disposal unit from Edinburgh arrived at the scene at around 7pm and identified the device as a 60 mm motar which, they said, was a type used during World War II.
Once the mortar was identified it was placed in a steel box by two of the Royal Logistic Corps soldiers, who then secured it in their van.
Escorted by two police vans, the bomb was then taken to a controlled area of BAerdeen Beach to be detonated.
The detonator was activated and the bomb was exploded, letting off a loud bang and sending sand bags 30ft into the air.
