John Owens delivered a successful first weightlifting workshop.

John delivered the 2 hour workshop to a group of 6 members wanting to increase their knowledge of Olympic weightlifting. John taught the participants how to Clean and Jerk and also how to perform the Snatch. The weightlifting workshop was such a success and he already has workshop 2 lined up this month and another in January planned. Feedback from all participants were positive and they all feel a lot more confident with the moves. They thanked John for all his knowledge and hints and tips on how to move underneath the bar.

Gathimba Foundation – Sarah Simpson

Our long-standing Personal Trainer Sarah Simspon spent all of October 2022 in Kenya with the Gathimba Edwards Foundation repairing houses and meeting sponsors, making a change to lives that are a a lot less fortunate than us.

Myles Edwards first met Gideon Gathimba whilst racing in a 1-mile running event which was organised by his father, Mel Edwards for the opening of Aberdeen Sports Village in 2009. Since then Kenyan international and former 4 x 1500m relay world record holder, Gideon and Scottish 1,500m champion, Myles became great friends with Myles regularly living and training with him in Kenya. Gideon had often spoken about his desire to help disadvantaged children in Kenya and in May 2013 the pair saw a real opportunity to turn this dream into reality. Some people's paths cross for a reason. Sarah has been a strong ambassador for the charity and this is her second time over to Kenya. She met Samuel and his grandmother who she helped build a house with solar power and helped them gain access to clean water.

“The first time I met Samuel, I wept the condition they were living in, now I am one of the happiest man alive seeing the smile of him and his family, and their new house where they live comfortably without struggle” – James – one of the Kenyan farmers working in partnership with the Gathimba Foundation.

Scott Woods has gotten back into performing live music since pre-Covid

Scott and a former ASV team member, Abbie Purkis, performed to a large audience at the Cellar Bar at the start of October 2022. Their set was such a success that they have been phoned by the organisers of ‘Doune the Rabbit Hole’ festival; the same festival the likes of Amy MacDonald and Belle & Sebastian have performed at in Scotland.
