The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) NPLQ is the most widely awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland. It is also recognised internationally. The qualification is a great starting point for anyone interested in working in the leisure industry.
During the course, you will learn:
- Pool rescue techniques
- Lifeguarding theory
- First aid and CPR
The course is physically demanding. You will need to swim to set times, lift casualties and dive to the deepest part of the pool.
Training and assessment take place across three sections. You must pass all sections to gain the qualification.

Your NPLQ and AED certificate is valid for two years from the date you complete the course. The First Aid at Work certificate is valid for three years.

Please note that bookings are non-refundable. An administration fee of £30 may apply if you need to change your course.
Course Prerequisites
You must be 16 years old or over and able to:

Jump or dive into deep water

Swim 50m in under 60 seconds

Swim 100m continuously on both front and back

Tread water in deep water for 30 seconds

Surface dive to the bottom of the pool

Climb out of the pool unaided, without a ladder or steps
All participants must complete a short swim test to confirm they meet these requirements.
You must attend 100% of the course to complete the qualification.
This course includes classroom learning and pool-based training. The trainer will only put candidates forward for assessment if they reach the required standard.

Lunch is not provided. There is an on-site café where you can buy food and drinks.
