A rare moment for the North East as the Tall Ships returned to Aberdeen in 2025.

The return of the Tall Ships Races brought energy, pride and opportunity to the region.

At ASV, we proudly played a central part in welcoming crews from around the world and showcasing what our community does so well.

Hosting the Tall Ships Open Day and Crew Sports Day

As part of the city’s International Crew Programme, ASV hosted the Tall Ships Open Day and Crew Sports Day: a morning of Highland Games activities, Football Fast Fives and table tennis that gave visiting trainees a real taste of North East hospitality.

Working with Aberdeen City Council and Sail Training International, our team brought together hundreds of young people, volunteers and community partners for a day built around connection, participation and friendly competition.

The event made full use of our indoor and outdoor facilities. Highlights included the crew parade around our athletics track, led by the Robert Gordon’s College Pipe Band, and several closely contested sporting fixtures across the programme.

For many trainees, it was their first introduction to Scottish culture. For local residents and organisations, it offered a chance to feel part of a global celebration happening on their doorstep.

Impact on the region

Events like this don’t come to the region often. The Tall Ships boosted the local economy, created new volunteering and partnership opportunities, and strengthened Aberdeen’s international profile.

This collective effort, including ASV’s role in delivering the Tall Ships Open Day and Crew Sports Day, helped the city secure the Sultan Qaboos Sailing Trophy, one of the highest honours in global sail training.

For ASV, it was a privilege to be involved. The event reflected the values at the heart of our work: opening our doors to the community, creating memorable experiences, and giving young people opportunities to grow, connect and feel inspired.

As we look back on a standout year for Aberdeen, we’re proud that ASV helped shape a moment that will be remembered across the North East for years to come.
