ASV's Head of Sport & Events, Graham Morrison, has been awarded Mentor of the Year

by Robert Gordon University's School of Creative and Cultural Business during their annual congratulatory event.

This award was one of the industry awards presented to local organisations and individuals who have proved vital to the School of Creative and Cultural Business over the past year.

Alongside everything he does at ASV (including helping bring over 100 events to ASV in the first year of reopening post-Covid) Graham's passion for sport and wellbeing is clearly seen through his long-standing involvement in local sport events. This includes serving as Race Director for Run Garioch, Inverurie's annual spring running event, since July 2017.

Graham has also worked unofficially with RGU for a number of years to support their students, speak with students as part of their courses, and provide experience opportunities.

Joining the mentorship programme 3 years ago has helped him develop consistency in his approach to mentoring students. When asked about what inspired him to officially become a mentor through RGU Graham said "Experience opportunities is key to support future employment, which is the key reason that I am involved - to help provide students with the best possible change in their future employment opportunities."

Through RGU's mentorship programme, mentors are matched with one or more students; Graham focuses on working with students interested in pursuing a career in sporting events. Over 9 months, Graham meets with students, assists with courses when possible, and answers any questions they might have.

While mentorship programmes such as RGU's are hugely beneficial to students, Graham pointed out that mentors can benefit from being involved as well! He said that while he is there to help and provide guidance, "it also gives me the opportunity to speak with students and understand what they are learning, what's new in the world of events, and ensure that I continue with my own development. I am a firm believer that this mentorship is a two-way street where we all benefit."
