Local schoolchildren get access to free sport thanks to collaboration at ASV

Please check out the video created for the Home of Community Sport project. Hear from Wood, Nescol, Premier Coaches and ASV about the importance of supporting such a great project.

On Thursday the 8th of February we hosted a media launch for our Home of Community Sport project. This project helps boost Aberdeen's schoolchildren's participation in sport and physical activity.

The Home of Community Sport (HoCS) project is supported and funded by Wood, the University of Aberdeen (UoA), and Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) who have joined forces to deliver this impactful initiative. As part of their commitment to the local community, the three high profile partners will use the HoCS initiative to provide better access to sport for school pupils in the north of the city and promote the benefits of healthy and active lifestyles.

Based at ASV and working in partnership with local schools, HoCS will enhance opportunities for sport and physical activity for pupils by removing some of the barriers to participation, as the cost-of-living crisis grips the country and impacts communities.

The HoCS will provide pupils with access to ASV’s high quality facilities, made available throughout the school year, and featuring a range of exciting opportunities in a variety of sports.

It only takes an investment of £3.60 a week, per child to provide access to this unique initiative. This investment clearly demonstrates that through collaboration and a shared passion to make a difference in the community, a partnership can make a significant and positive impact in children’s lives. Hundreds will benefit in a range of activities including swimming lessons, athletics and racket sports.

Martin Simmonite, Senior Vice President for UK Operations at Wood stated “We are delighted to collaborate with The UoA and ASV on this innovative project. It has never been more important for school children to be physically active and engaged in sport and introducing children to physical activity at an early age, lays the foundations for a healthier lifestyle and a more active future..We are proud to support this exciting project that will make a difference to hundreds of local school children.”

Alongside the support from Wood and the University of Aberdeen, this project would not be possible if not for the help from Premier Coaches and Nescol. Premier Coaches are providing transportation for these schools to and from ASV. Nescol is providing the sports coaching for the children who are undertaking their qualifications in sports coaching.

Commenting on the programme and partnership, Gillian Kerr, Sport and Active Health Officer at the UoA said: “The University proudly supports the HoCS and we are delighted to work alongside Wood and ASV delivering this unique project to local school children as well as making an impact on NESCol students who are gaining practical experience in a coaching environment helping them achieve their college goals.

Gillian continued; “The HoCS initiative is about encouraging fun, play and enjoyment, regardless of age or level of ability, and demonstrates the commitment of the University, Wood & ASV to work together for the good of our local communities and its young people.”

We would like to thank all those involved in making the Home of Community Sport Project possible and we look forward to delivering more free sport to schoolchildren in the local community.
