ASV athletes from the Aberdeen Amateur Athletic Club had a strong weekend at the BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships in Sheffield from 13 to 15 February, competing against students from across the UK and delivering a series of excellent performances.
The highlight came in the Women’s 4x200m relay, where Ihinosen Ibhanesebhor, Briagha Cook, Eve Garry and Grace Brennan ran superbly to take the bronze medal. Their time of 1:41.32 also set a new AAAC Senior Women’s Indoor 4x200m club record, making it a memorable achievement for the team.
There were strong runs in the hurdles too, with Erin Williams and Briagha Cook both reaching the Women’s 60m Hurdles final, finishing 5th and 7th in a very competitive race.
In the field events, Katherine Fowler placed 4th in the high jump in a competition that featured international athletes. Grace Brennan followed this with an 8th place finish in the pole vault, while Kitty Burton came just centimetres short of a personal best in the shot put.
For several athletes, the championships marked their first appearance at BUCS level. Struan Linton made an impressive start by reaching the semi-finals in both the 60m and 200m, with Tony Wesley also progressing to the 60m semi-final.
Eve Garry and Ihinosen Ibhanesebhor reached the 200m semi-finals, while Charlotte Bevan made the semi-final in the 60m. In the relays, Tony Wesley and Justin Ekeh helped the University of Aberdeen team to a strong 5th place finish in the 4x200m final.
Middle distance runners also performed well, with Caitlin Purcell reaching the 1500m semi-final. Abby Farquhar and Kirsty Purcell narrowly missed out on progressing in the 800m and 3000m after closely fought races.
Overall, it was a brilliant weekend for AAAC and Aberdeen University Athletics Club athletes, with strong performances across events and a club record to celebrate.
