Giving Back to the Community:
A Special Table Tennis Event at ASV
At ASV, we believe sports are more than just physical activity—they offer a way to bring people together, inspire growth, and give back to the community and this belief was at the heart of a recent event that brought two table tennis legends, Alan Cooke and Nicola Deaton, to ASV for a series of exclusive coaching sessions aimed at developing local talent.
A Visit from World-Class Coaches
We were deeply honored to host Alan Cooke and Nicola Deaton, two of the most accomplished figures in table tennis. Alan Cooke, a six-time English Men’s Singles Champion and five-time Commonwealth Gold Medalist, has represented England at four Olympic Games and earned multiple European Silver and Bronze Medals. Nicola Deaton’s career is equally impressive—she has won the English Women’s Singles title five times, holds 16 English National Titles, and has been crowned National Champion in every age group. Her accolades also include medals in European and Commonwealth competitions.
For our local athletes, having the chance to meet, interact with, and learn from such decorated champions was a rare privilege. Alan and Nicola brought a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion for the sport, demonstrating their commitment to helping others achieve their potential. Their presence at ASV provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for table tennis enthusiasts of all ages and abilities.
Elevating Local Players
The coaching sessions were carefully designed to benefit players at various stages of their journey, from beginners eager to improve their basic skills to more advanced athletes striving to perfect their technique. What made these sessions stand out was the personalized attention Alan and Nicola gave to each participant. Whether focusing on footwork, stroke mechanics, or game strategy, the sessions were tailored to meet the needs of individual players, ensuring that everyone walked away with valuable insights.
Many participants remarked on the dedication and precision that both Alan and Nicola brought to their training. Beyond the technical aspects of table tennis, they also emphasised the importance of mental preparation and the mindset needed to excel in competitive sports. Being able to learn directly from two athletes who have competed at the highest levels was a transformative experience for everyone involved.
Also, for many of the participants, watching Alan and Nicola in action was a truly eye-opening experience. It gave them a glimpse into the level of dedication and discipline required to succeed on the world stage, and it showed them that with the right support, they too can achieve great things. The sessions served as a reminder that success in sports is not just about talent—it’s about hard work, perseverance, and a passion for continuous improvement.
Looking Ahead
In the months and years ahead, we look forward to hosting more events that bring top-tier athletes to Aberdeen, providing local players with the resources and inspiration they need to succeed. Whether it’s through special coaching sessions, community outreach, or our regular programming, ASV will continue to be a hub for sports excellence and community engagement.
