Two major sporting events hosted at Aberdeen Sports Village in August generated an estimated £345,000+ economic impact, bringing more than 2,300 attendees to the city across six days of competition.
The 4J Scottish Senior and U18 Athletics Championships on 29–30 August welcomed 1,638 attendees to ASV, generating an estimated £179,909.98 for the local economy.
The championships brought some of Scotland’s leading athletes to Aberdeen, including three-time Commonwealth Games athlete Nick Percy, who claimed his ninth Scottish Senior discus title at ASV.
Earlier in the month, the Northern European Dodgeball Championships, held from 7–9 August, brought around 700 attendees to Aberdeen, generating a further £165,355. Teams travelled from Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to compete alongside Scotland across men's, women's and mixed competitions.
The impact reached beyond the competition itself, with teams from three countries travelling via Edinburgh before continuing to Aberdeen, while around 200 people attended a gala dinner at the Sandman Hotel during their stay. The gala dinner is not included in the economic impact figure, meaning the overall contribution to the city was even greater.
Major events form an important part of ASV's year-round sporting calendar, bringing athletes, teams and spectators to Aberdeen while supporting accommodation, hospitality, transport and other businesses across the city.
And these two events are just part of a much bigger picture. Over the past year, ASV has welcomed major competitions including the Netball Europe U17 Championships, Scottish National Age Group Swimming Championships (SNAGS), British Masters Swimming Championships and national events across swimming, diving, athletics and more.
