James Coull officiating a match

It’s not every day you meet someone who can switch from helping things run smoothly at Aberdeen Sports Village to officiating senior football at the weekend. But that’s exactly what Operations Assistant James Coull does.

James has recently been promoted to Category 3 football referee, a big milestone in his refereeing journey.

We had a quick chat to hear how it all started, what he’s learned along the way, and what he’s aiming for next.

How did you first get into refereeing?

I started refereeing in 2022 after completing the referee course as part of the school pathway when I was at Bucksburn Academy. Since then, I’ve worked my way up through juveniles, amateurs and juniors, and I’m now into my first season in the Highland League.

What does being Category 3 involve?

It means I can officiate in senior football as long as I’m meeting the required performance and fitness standards. I’m now refereeing in the Scottish Highland and Lowland Leagues, and I can also act as an Assistant Referee in Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) League One and Two.

What’s been the most challenging part so far?

Dealing with the players side of it can be tough, and self-reflection is a big part of the job too. Refereeing can feel quite lonely at times, so having a strong support network around you really helps.

Football will always bring disagreement, but being approachable and fair makes a big difference. Explaining decisions to players and coaches helps too. Even when you have to make a difficult call, good communication goes a long way.

What do you enjoy most about it?

It keeps me active and involved in football, and it feels good to give something back to the game. I played juvenile football growing up, and when I took refereeing as a school subject, I liked the idea of developing a new skill.

It’s also helped build my confidence on and off the pitch. I’m better at speaking to players and explaining decisions, and I’ve developed leadership skills through leading teams of officials and managing matches.

My fitness has improved a lot as well, and I can cover the ground much more comfortably now thanks to training.

How do you fit it around work at ASV?

I work part-time at ASV alongside my studies at RGU, where I’m studying International Business Management. The team here are always really accommodating if a match clashes with work, even at short notice, which I really appreciate.

What’s next for you?

I’d love to push into the professional leagues in the SPFL and learn as much as possible from experienced officials. One day, I’d also love to lead a team of officials at a cup final.

Congratulations again to James on a fantastic achievement. We’re proud to have him on the ASV team and wish him all the best for the rest of the season and beyond.
