ASV Staff Member Tackles Half-Marathon and Raises Hundreds for Movember
Movember, the global charity dedicated to men’s health, once again inspired action and raised awareness for critical issues like mental health and testicular cancer. This year, Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) staff member Lewis Bailie took his efforts to new heights, raising an impressive £401 for the cause.
A Movember participant for three years, Bailie had previously supported the charity through growing a moustache, events, and running 60km in November. This year, he aimed higher, challenging himself both physically and mentally by running his first-ever half marathon.
“Movember is a charity that affects anyone who knows a man,” said Bailie. “Mental health is vital, and men need to feel heard.”
Coming from a swimming background, running was no small feat. Yet, he took on the challenge as a symbol of the struggles faced by many men. Alongside half-marathon training, he committed to running 120km throughout November, doubling his previous target. This figure reflects the 60 men lost to suicide every hour worldwide.
Bailie’s efforts culminated in completing the Edinburgh Half Marathon at Holyrood Park in stormy conditions, finishing in an impressive 1:51:52, well under his two-hour goal. His determination and fundraising combined with the ASV team’s contributions to achieve a remarkable £792 for Movember.
Looking ahead, Bailie hopes to inspire greater involvement from the ASV community. “It would be fantastic to see ASV members join future charity initiatives,” he said, encouraging everyone to participate by donating, joining team events, growing moustaches, or contributing to physical challenges.
Bailie’s story highlights the power of individual and collective action in tackling men’s health issues. His achievements and call to action demonstrate how everyone can make a difference for Movember and beyond.
